I was in La Union during the last weekend of February, hoping to shoot some action at the 3rd Manila Surfers Cup. Unfortunately, the waves were not so great on the first day of the event, and I also needed to head back to Manila a day earlier than intended. I was still able to take enough decent images to get me started on my long overdue plan to cover the surfing scene around the Philippines.

The beaches of La Union are good starting points for those who would like to learn surfing. Lessons are available at Urbiztondo beach in San Juan, the most popular surfing beach with a safe sand break that's perfect for beginners. It's a six-hour car drive from manila and public buses travel round-the-clock to San Fernando, the provincial capital. Several hotels and resorts in the area offer accommodations for a wide range of budgets. Swell season is between October to March, so head out now while the waves are still around.
